6 Things to Cut from Social Profiles During a Job Search

6 Things to Cut from Social Profiles During a Job Search6 Things to Cut from Social Profiles During a Job Search198When searching for a new job, youre likely focused on preparing or updating your resume, writing cover letters, and hunting for the perfect role. But theres a crucial step that you may be overlooking. Have you ever considered your public image and social profiles and how they may be interpreted by a potential employer? With so many social media outlets available, you may want to consider any ways in which you might be oversharing and possibly negatively influencing your hiring potential.Reviewing social media accounts such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn by human resource professionals is now commonplace. If you share too much, such as your personal views or inappropriate images on unterstellung social profiles, its very possible that youll be bypassed for the job opening. Before submitting your next resume, clean up your social profiles by eliminating the fo llowing information1. Certain Google ResultsWhat do you find online when you Google your name? Anything derogatory? You might see documentation of any court cases you were involved in, clubs or memberships you belong to, and previous employment information. Be sure to cleanse the web of anything that could hurt your job prospects. For example, a professional writer can often find that articles are lifted and reposted by other sites without permission. Contact the website manager to remove that information, particularly if the site has a bad reputation.Additionally, consider setting up a simple personal website about yourself that puts your career interests in a positive light. Include information about professional affiliations such as career memberships and add your career search mission so potential employers can see your commitment to your profession. Consider sharing relevant news related to your industry, too, to validate your commitment to professionalism.2. Political ViewsWhi le its admirable to be politically aware and active, voicing your political opinions on social profiles can be a drawback to landing the perfect role. While searching for a position, keep your views private or, better yet, dont post about them at all until youve landed a role. Keeping this information under wraps will eliminate any misunderstandings or biases during your hintergrund check or preliminary human resources review. Once youve landed your career position, be cautious of coworkers or supervisors that you accept friend requests from- this, too, could torpedo your career if youre deemed as too vocal or dont share the same views as your coworkers.3. Soapbox RantsDont forget to scour Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or other social media outlets for any long-winded rants that could be misconstrued or shine a bad light on you as a job candidate or potential employee. Are you angry about something happening within your city or upset with a local company and have shared that on soci al media? Were you livid about the last election? If so, delete4. Inappropriate Content or Offensive MemesThis should be a no-brainer, but its still worth mentioning. Whether you like to bash the Green Bay Packers or abedrngnisher rival team or poke fun at your liberal uncle, its important to remove this content from your social media accounts. You dont want to convey the wrong impression or be judged based on this content. Consider limiting your posting during the search and be sensitive to any content after youve landed the job, especially if your manager sends you a friend request. Keep your online image clean and tight.5. Negative Comments About Previous EmployersThis should be obvious, but dont bash a prior supervisor or company. Ever. The instant gratification you get from doing so will not be worth losing a good job opportunity over.6. PhotosReview your photos with a critical eye, starting with your profile photo. If your headshot doesnt show a person who exudes confidence wi th a polished style, consider updating the photo. Better yet, hire a local photographer to take a professional photo. Dont forget to look in your digital photo albums to remove any images that show a party atmosphere or bad personal habits that might turn off a hiring manager.

Five money rules that will increase your net worth

Five money rules that will increase your net worthFive money rules that will increase your net worthWhats your personal finance strategy? If you asked me a few years ago, I would probably laugh it off Ill leave that for tomorrow.Dumb move. If you dont have a personal finance strategy, theres a chance you will never get wealthy. The average millennialearns$40-$50K a year and has $20-$40K in student debt. But the high achieving millennial earns up to 7X mora than the average. The same is true for people of all ages. The difference between average earners and above-earners is huge.Once I realized that, I got serious about money. But I didnt focus on making mora money- a mistake that many of us make. We always think more cash is the solution to everything. All my problems will be solved once I have a little bit more cash on hand. Sorry to disappoint you, but that will never happen. As your bank account grows, your problems will too.Yes, earning more is important. Not only for your bank acc ount but for your career development. As you get better and have more experience you can earn more. But we must stop thinking that the solution to all our problems is more money. Were better off by creating a strategy that helps us to manage money better- that alone will help us break away from the average earners. To do that, Ive created 7 money rules for myself.1. Desire lessHeres some common sense It takes more time to make money than to spend it. You work thousands of hours to make a certain amount of money. And then, you can drop it all on a new car, luxury vacation, watch, or anything else that you desire. We all know that, right? And yet, we keep on spending money like its nothing. I know this is something your granddad probably said, but the easiest way to grow your bank account is NOT to spend it all.Its solid advice. The ancient Stoics knew about this too.True freedom means you desire less.2. Know how the economy worksWhen does the interest rate generally go up? When does it go down? What are bonds? Whats inflation? When do you get inflation? Whats a market cycle? Why do economies generally collapse? Whats debt? Who prints money? Why do they print money?I can go on forever, but you get the point. Look, you dont have to be an economist (I aya aint one). But do yourself a favor, read a book likeA Random Walk Down Wallstreetby Burton Malkiel. Its an excellent summary of how the economy and investing work. Or, spend some time onInvestopedia.comand figure out the answers to all the above questions- and more. The point is that basic knowledge about how all this stuff works prevents panic. Oh sh-t The market is down What now Panicking will not help you.3. Avoid personal debtPersonal debt destroys your net worth like nothing else. To be clear, I dont think theres anything wrong with borrowing money. If you want to start a business or do big real estate deals, its often necessary and smart to take on debt. But we must be wise about taking on debt. Like investing, there are rules to it.One thing is sure Never borrow money to buy a car, electronics, or anything else that goes down in value. But when it comes to more complex things like growing/starting a business, investing in real estate, or even your education, think carefully before you go into debt. Remember that borrowing money is not free.4. Save as much as you canThis is obvious by now. Desire less, avoid debt, and save as much as you can. Personal finance is called personal finance for a reason.Your money strategy depends on your age, personality, place you live, education, experience, etc. A person who lives in Manhattan probably cant buy an apartment. Its overpriced, and renting is probably smarter.Buying an apartment makes more sense in a city with lower real estate prices. In that case, renting is more expensive. No matter what you do, always make sure you have enough cash so you can make an investment if you spot an opportunity. How much in savings is enough? Thats up to you. What f igure makes you feel comfortable?5. Have a short-term strategyThis article is for people who do NOT want to become professional investors or traders. We invest for the long-term- not to make money today or even in a year.My investment strategy is focused on the long-term. But that means I also need to generate income today so I can pay the bills. How do you do that? Thats your short-term strategy. My personal short-term money strategy is based onimproving my skillsand creating multiple income streams. I invest a lot in my personal education because I realize more skills mean more earning power. Also, I dont rely on one big paycheck. Instead, I have multiple ways I generate value. That means less risk. If one income stream disappears, youll still have others.Start nowYou see, these rules are not all about making more money.Yes, its important to have multiple income streams. But before you focus on generating more money, get better at dealing with the cash you already have and improve yo ur skills. The most important question you can ask yourself today is this Can I generate value? If the answer isno, then make it your first priority turn that into ayes. Figure out how successful people are rewarded. You cant learn that from one article. Read books, study investors, try things out, talk to wealthy people, etc.You want to generate value- either by working for it or investing. And whether you get paid 10 bucks on 10.000, the principles of value creation are always the same. A person who can make a grand can also make ten grand, and so forth. When you find out how to make your bank account grow instead of decreasing it, youre already on the way to make your net worth grow.Thisarticlefirst appeared onDariusForoux.com.

How to Modify and Maximize Your Resume Template

How to Modify and Maximize Your Resume TemplateHow to Modify and Maximize Your Resume TemplateHow to Modify and Maximize your Resume TemplateShould you use a resume template? If you follow career advice on the Internet, youve probably read conflicting information about whether its acceptable to use a template, or if you should create your own. There are two sides to this debateYes, its ok to use a resume template because its efficient and hiring managers dont care, andNo, its not ok because hiring managers will recognize the template and judge you as being lazy and unoriginal.Lets get one thing out of the way first argument number 1 is truer than number 2 - heres why.Hiring managers are not beauty pageant judgesHiring managers are paid to judge you as a candidate for a specific job role, not judge whether your template is unique or original.Donald Trump is the only person on earth who actually does both judge resumes and beauty pageants. The resume is merely a vessel for conveying inf ormation selling you as perfect for that job role. Provided that your resume template is clear and well organized, it is the information on the resume that is important, not whether its conveyed aesthetically in an original way.Only an incompetent hiring manager would reject a perfect candidate for a job role simply because the applicant used a Microsoft Word resume template. Now, while argument number 1 is truer, argument number 2 also has some merit that must be acknowledged - and this part is especially relevant for college students.Where the resume template needs workWhile downloading a resume template is perfectly acceptable, there are template modifications you can make that will maximize the impact of your resume and help you land more interview.Example College StudentsA lack of work experience can make resume writing very difficult. The average college student is lacking in real job experience. Many have none whatsoever, and others may have had some internship roles or summer gigs. The problem? In general, resume templates are designed for professionals who already have solid work experiences.Heres the crux of the issue because of the lack of work experience, a downloaded resume template may not be the best vessel to convey information for college students. College students may need to modify the template in order to package their experiences in a way that emphasizes their professionalism in an academic setting. So heres what it comes down to for college studentsYes, by all means, download a resume template. Its efficient and they look good. And yes, by all means, modify the template to better convey your experiences as a college student. If the template is the aesthetic shell of a car, the modifications youll make are to the engine. But what modifications should college students make?Put the Education section firstIf the resume template youve downloaded starts with a Professional Profile Qualifications Summary or some other introductory section, consider eliminating it and moving the Education section to the top. For more info, you can read our article on how to start a resume. As a college student, your academic credentials are the most important part of your resume. Given that you have little to no professional experience to speak of, giving yourself a Professional Profile would be a stretch.Create a Major Achievements sectionWhat major achievements from college can you put on your resume?College students with little to no work experience are often at a loss for how to fill up an entire page for a resume. One way is to create a Major Achievements section that serves the saatkorn functional purpose as the Work Experience section on a professionals resume. In this section, you can add bullet points about your academic and life achievements, provided they are relevant to the job you are applying for.Example 1 If you were a part of your campus newspaper or magazine, you would treat it like a real job. Include the name of the publication , the dates you worked on it, your position, and write bullet points indicating your biggest achievements and contributions.Example 2 If you were in student government, include your position, the dates you served, and write bullet points indicating your biggest achievements and contributions. This strategy can be applied to any club or organization you participated in during college.Note If you also had work experience, you can include both sections, with an emphasis on whichever experiences are most relevant to the job you are applying for.ConclusionWith some slight modifications, downloading a resume template is a perfectly acceptable way for busy college students to save time. Again, a good resume template is one that conveys information clearly a function of font size, font style, use of white space, use of bolding, italics, and underlines, and margins.Save yourself a headache, download a resume template, and make necessary cosmetic changes to give yourself a boost over your com petition. We also highly recommend using our acclaimed resume builder, which will automatically format your job descriptions onto our famous templates, and allow you to make easy modifications.

11 Tips for Dealing with a Prolonged Job Search

11 Tips for Dealing with a Prolonged Job Search11 Tips for Dealing with a Prolonged Job SearchEvery job seeker hopes their dream position is right around the corner, but sometimes a hunt lasts longer than expected. And while job satisfaction is worth the wait, a lengthy search can be quite frustrating. The good news is, there are some ways to help yourself deal with the stress and impatience you might be feeling during a prolonged job search.Heres a look at some of the issues that commonly arise during a prolonged job search and tips for dealing with themAvoiding NegativityThe enthusiasm that permeated the early stages of your job search can dwindle with the passing of time. But nobody wants to hire a downer, so take measures to keep up your spirits and confidence.Exercise, eat right, and get sufficient sleep. These actions will help you to look and feel better.Try to celebrate small successes along your journey, says Kelly Donovan, principal of Kelly Donovan Associates. If someone r eplies to a networking notenzeichen you sent, or an HR representative contacts you for a phone screening after you applied for a position, you should pat yourself on the back. Dont be so focused on your ultimate goal of a new position that you consider yourself to be a failure every day you dont have a new job yet.Create a care team, suggests job search strategist Sarah Johnston, founder of the Briefcase Coach. Unemployment can really mess with your psyche, and you need people to pour truth into you about your worth and advocate for you. Team members might include professional mentors, positive friends who have seen you in good times, religious leaders, and your financial adviser.Similarly, feel free to decline invitations from pessimistic friends who always see the glass as half empty.Combatting BoredomFeeling stagnant? Weeks of hunkering down in a home office scanning job boards and sending out resumes gets old. Shake things up both professionally and personally to fight monotony. Volunteer. Youll gain skills, meet new people, and feel good about making a difference in the world.Throw effort into networking. Connections remain a top way to find a job, and lunch with an old college friend beats another afternoon parked in front of the computer.Take a class or learn a new skill. Youll enrich your resume and develop something fresh to talk about in interviews. And conquering a new challenge stimulates the brain.Maintaining MomentumThe job search may have started with a meticulous agenda in which you accomplished defined objectives. After awhile, however, job seekers often get sloppy about sticking to a plan. Instead of feeling guilty, find new ways to encourage productivity.Join a job search work team, Johnston suggests. I really love the job search book by Orville Pierson called Team UpHis research shows that job seekers who are on job search teams find work 20% faster.Seek professional advice. Youd go to a doctor if your physical condition didnt improve over t ime, so why not see a job coach to figure out what might be causing obstacles to career well-being?Handling Money ProblemsFinally, a longer-than-expected job hunt can bring financial distress. Before settling for an undesirable job that might soon lead you back to hunting, consider other options.Take on a part-time or temporary job. Youll bring in money while still having time to conduct searches and go on interviews.Use your talents to freelance, consult, or take on gig work. Besides the earnings, youll enhance your resume and portfolio. And people impressed with your work may be able to put you in touch with others interested in offering full-time employment.Find a job that fits your lifestyle Browse Open Flexible Jobs

Use these 3 tips to talk like a boss

Use these 3 tips to talk like a baboUse these 3 tips to talk like a bossWhen you become a boss, you not only need to know how to be a leader, you need to learn how to communicate like one, too. Language that was fine for you to use as an underling in the shadows is no longer appropriate when youre in the spotlight making decisions. Here are tips on how to ease the transition from employee to boss, and talk like the boss you need to be, so that you can project the confidence in your abilities that you need to succeed1) Get to the pointTo command a room, you need to make your case compelling, and you do that by being upfront about what youre arguing and keeping your words concise.Sylvia Ann Hewlett, author of Executive Presence, says that leaders need to let go of the notes, the very long PowerPoints. Let go of the podium and make eye contact. When you let go of your communication crutches and your canned speeches, you come across as more authentic and you telegraph your executive prese nce more clearly. You dont confuse or waste your audiences time with jargon you want to hook their attention from the departure. To get to the point, you can drop polite introductory qualifiers that signal hesitance like hopefully or perhaps in your correspondences. Employees often use these qualifiers to pad their requests and signal deference to people above them. As the boss, you set the tone and make the final decisions. To talk like a decision maker, you need to use clear, active language that proves you call the shots and can think outside of specific functions or roles.Visionary leaders dont just talk about what the company is doing today, they paint a picture of what the company will be doing in the future.2) Speak in threesIf you want to convince people as a leader, break down your message into three points Government of the people, by the people, for the people. Thats what Simon Lancaster, a top speechwriter to politicians and CEOs, recommends in his TEDx talk on the subjec t.Speaking in three parallel words, phrases, or clauses is known as tricolon, an ancient Roman rhetorical device that leaders still use to this day.You put your argument in threes, it makes it sound more compelling, more convincing, more credible, Lancaster said in his talk. Its a rule that CEOs Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs have used regularly in their public speeches. You can apply this to any business communication, and start using it in your emails, presentations, and meetings.Theres a limit to what our working memories can remember. By speaking in threes, you force yourself to choose the three most important reasons youre making a point, and you use a narrative structure that we have been conditioned to follow since nursery rhymes. As improv coach Kristin Schier notes, the rule of three also teaches your audience to see your words as an argument worth following The first time you say something, its an incident, the second time you say something, its a coincidence, but the third time you say something, it becomes a pattern.3) Know when to speak up and when to listenIts not just how you speak like a boss, but when you choose to do so. Strategic leaders dont just blurt out their ideas they read the room and see when would be the best time to speak for maximum impact.Understanding context and picking up on social cues are what Harvard Business Review argue is key for people to develop their executive voice. Knowing or finding out in advance what your expected role is in a group forum or event can guide you in determining the kind of voice you need for that particular venue and can help ensure that you understand the context before you speak up, HBR states. When employees notice that you dont know your expected role, you come off as unprepared and this undercuts your leadership.Putting it all togetherPutting your executive voice into action means knowing ahead of time what kind of conversation youre going into, so youre not caught off guard about what your exp ected role is. If youre in a room of other executives, that may mean staying silent and listening intently. If youre speaking at an all-hands to your company, that means taking the lead role and speaking your vision. With these three changes, you can learn to command and hold the attention of your employees, so that people dont just know youre the boss, they hear you as one, too.Whats the biggest thing you learned when you became a manager for the first time? How to Get Out of a Career Rut Fast - The Muse

How to Get Out of a Career Rut Fast - The MuseHow to Get Out of a Career Rut Fast So its another boring Wednesday.Or is just a typical draining Tuesday.Or dear God- is it still only Monday? Morning?SighAre you just going through the motions on career autopilot? Maybe feeling lost or distracted or drained, yet you dont know why? Honestly, all you do know is that time is passing and you are feeling pretty unhappy about your career. Somewhere, somehow- you checked out and now youre just cruising. If any of the following apply to you, you can know for sure that its time to make some moves. 1. You Blink and Six Months Have PassedA huge sign youre on autopilot in your career is that time just seems to, well, pass. And not because youre so engrossed in your work, but because every day is like the next and for the life of you, you cant name one recent accomplishment youre proud to discuss. You wake up in January, stretch, and suddenly its Memorial Day. You start planning the summer and realiz e- wait, its time for the holidays And through it all you keep saying I shouldI should get a new job.I should try and find work I actually like.I should pick up that cool new skill I keep talking about. And yet, time keeps passing.Heres What to Do About ItFirst off, stop using the word should. Start using the word will.Should implies that you have an out- its passive. Will is active. You are doing something. OK, made that switch?Your next step is to make a short-term plan. Its really hard to make big changes, like finding a new job. They feel overwhelming, you often dont know exactly where to start, and its easy to put it off.So instead, focus on the near-term future. If you want to get a new job, set a goal this month to update your resume. Thats it. Just focus on that one piece of the puzzle. Once you complete that piece, complete another, for example, you can reach out to three people in your network to tell them youre looking (this email template is a great place to start on that ). If you want to get promoted, set a goal to sit down with your boss this month to talk about what you need to do to make that happen. Or set a goal to identify an extra project thatll make you shine come review time.Keep your eyes on small, simple activities that will move your forward and give yourself a deadline so you stay motivated. Small steps add up to big changes more quickly than more people realize. 2. You Procrastinate Making Any Career Moves at AllOh procrastination, my old friend. If you tend to put off making big decisions, you arent alone.fruchtwein people think I need a new job and then immediately also think Maybe Ill stick it out here just a little bit longerBut when you procrastinate on doing anything- well, nothing changes.Part of the reason we do this is because we havent let ourselves see how awesome the new job (or career) could be. Instead we feel overwhelmed by the road to get there- or what we may lose by making a big change.Heres What to Do About ItSo the next time you think about changing something in your career, sit down for a moment and revel in the positive possibilities of what the change could bring to you.More money? A better commute? More interesting work? A boss you dont hate?Really get concrete on what taking positive action can give to you. Imagine it, allow yourself to feel good about the future. But dont stop there. Write it down- preferably in a place where youll see it every day. Put it on a sticky notenzeichen on your fridge or tape it to your bathroom mirror. Youll find yourself far more motivated (and much less likely to procrastinate) if the benefits are starring you in the face every day.3. You Have No Idea What You Want to Do Next- and You Havent for a WhileWhen people ask you about your career, you tend to make vague statements or change the topic. The truth is, you have no idea about what you want to do next- or even what would make you happy. And you cant remember the last time that you did because of that, you avoid doing anything.Heres What to Do InsteadGet help No, seriously.Instead of going through the same pattern of thought, I dont know what do with my career Argh, this is terrible. Now I feel bad. I may as well watch more TVFind help to learn how to figure it out. Dont feel bad You were never taught this in school, so its no wonder you dont know how to do it as an adult. There are one million books, programs, coaches, and ideas for you out there to get you started on this whole finding my passion thing. Use what you have in front of you (Hint the powers of Google and this website) to help you find exactly what you need. You can start by reading this, this, and this one, too. Dont feel you have to go it alone, asking for help can sometimes be the very best thing for you
